What's the best way to feed dogs? What's the ultimate diet?
One company sends you an email with a report that lamb is best.
Others talk about how much protein and how few grains they use.
Then you go to a website that is convincing you that their organic raw beef, salmon or chicken is best.
You could spend weeks on the internet researching for the "best" way to feed your dog.
You want your dog to eat food that is as carefully chosen as the food you choose for yourself (or maybe even better), right?
The answer about what to feed dogs is surprising
Where to start?
Start with questions:
- What does your dog's hair coat look like right now?
- What health issues does he have right now?
- How old is your dog?
- What is your dog's activity level for exercise and play?
- Does your dog seem sensitive to heat or to cold weather?
- Is there a time of day in which your dog sleeps more than normal or seems restless?
The focus you'll have is on viewing your dog as unique and not trying to fit him into a broad category of the canine species.
I made the mistake of jumping in and making homemade food for my dog, Gracie.
She had life-threatening health issues.
I went all over the Internet reading articles and reading labels and listening to manufacturer's and dog trainers talk about how to feed dogs.
Wasn't I doing the right thing in this healthy diet for feeding my dog?
- Organic-fed lamb
- Organic oats
- Organic squash
A veterinarian, who practices Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine for dogs, changed Gracie's diet to fit her health challenges.
She chose foods for Gracie that would have a cooling effect on her body as she healed.
Foods like fish, duck or turkey were fine but no lamb. No oats and no squash.
Gracie's liver was quite inflamed.
Amazingly, I saw changes within a couple of days.
So looking at Gracie's unique situation in choosing dog foods for her became a benchmark for what I would feed dogs who came into my life in the future.
Every dog gets evaluated based on the questions that we asked above.
Each dog gets to eat according to their uniqueness.
The Big Take Away So We Feed Dogs In The Perfect Way
Remember that our dogs are all different, just like we are.
So it makes sense that there is no "one-size-fits-all" diet or only one kind of meat that works for every dog.
To say dogs need lamb is like suggesting that every human should eat lamb.
We know there is way more to diet and nutrition than one meat or one kind of diet.
Especially for dogs with health issues or dogs with behavior challenges, these days I look into creating a unique diet for that dog.
Have you found a way to customize your dog's diet and feed your dog in a way that helps her to stay healthy and full of vitality?
